4TH Annual ~ The Golden Nose Award: A Finger Lakes Wine Experience Golden Nose 2006

What is the Golden Nose Award? The Finger Lakes Region has long been a producer of award-winning wines. Both domestically and overseas, dozens of wineries win prestigious awards every single year. However it has been over twenty years since a competition has been held specifically between Finger Lakes wineries only. But rather than bringing in a batch of professional tasters to adjudicate which wines are best, we are opting to invite you, the consumers, to judge. After all, what percentage of bottles of wine are sold to wine professionals? Very few. At the end of the day, it is your senses, your palates, and your noses that our wine must please. Thus the Golden Nose Award has been created.

This event is scheduled to take place May 30, 2009 and additional details on the 4th Annual Golden Nose Award: A Finger Lakes Wine Experience will be posted here. Aside from the unique experiences described below, judges will also receive a premium commemorative wine glass emblazoned with our bold event logo to help commemorate this unique event.

The Radisson Hotel Corning has rooms for this event. They are located about 6 blocks from the Corning Museum of Glass, and only one block from the Rockwell Museum of Western Art. Participants can make their reservations by calling the hotel reservations directly at 607-962-5000; please ask for the "Golden Nose Award" room block to receive the special rate.

You are also welcome to call the Seneca Lake Wine Trail office toll-free during normal business hours at: 877-536-2717.

Here is the scheduled itinerary:

ITINERARY

May 29, Friday Night Reception, 6 to 8 p.m., Judges and a guest (no additional charge for your guest) will be invited to an exclusive reception at the Rockwell Museum of Western Art. Located at 111 Cedar Street in Corning, in New York's historic Gaffer District, this reception will include live music, delicious wine and food and an opportunity to mingle with your fellow Judges. While we won't be encouraging you to take a glass of red wine around the Andy Warhols or famous paintings by Newell Convers Wyeth, guests will be welcome to enjoy the opportunity to explore this unique museum dedicated to the art of the old, wild west. You can see more about the Rockwell Museum at their website, http://www.rockwellmuseum.org/.

May 30, Saturday's Training & Judging Sessions, is the main event and will be hosted by the world-renowned Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG). Located only a block from the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, CMoG is an incredible experience unto itself. With state-of-the-art exhibits, live glass blowing demonstrations and an amazing gift shop this collection of glass-themed art, the largest in the world, spans all styles and eras. You can see more about CMoG at their website, http://www.cmog.org/.

8:30 am, Registration. Complimentary coffee and pastries.

From 9:00 am - 11:00 am, Training ~ Sit side-by-side with winemakers, professional wine judges and veteran winery owners to learn the fine craft of judging wines as you collectively assess the dozens of wines presented to you. You could read a Dummies guide about doing it, but as we all know, sitting down with friendly professionals and having them train us is a much more enjoyable and effective means of learning this art. Attendance is required.

From 11:15 am - 4:00 pm Judging ~ The actual Finger Lakes Wine judging will take place during this session. Professionals will be on hand to lend advice and help guide you, our novice Judges, through the process, continuing to answer questions and help make the experience pleasant yet effective. Hundreds of wines produced in the Finger Lakes Region will be represented. The exact categories are still being determined, but will range from the sweet intensity of Ice Wines to the sublime dryness of Pinots: virtually all types of wines will be present for this competition. A delicious lunch, from Chef Christian Chiron, will be served during this phase of the event. Attendance is required.

Following the judging, Judges will be given a three hour window of time to rest, visit the museum and get ready for the evening. During this time, event staff will be collating the results and calculating the winners.

Saturday Evening’s Dinner Reception, Grand Tasting and Awards Ceremony

virgil_cain_image.jpgFrom 7 - 10 pm ~ Entry to this reception is given to guests who have a Judges Pass, Training Pass or an Awards Dinner Pass. This event will be a formal gathering, with fine catered foods and award winning wines being served in a grazing atmosphere. Attendees will have the opportunity to mingle and enjoy themselves while listening to live music from Virgil Cain and tasting some of the top wines in each category. The evening will culminate in the best of class awards being presented by Assemblyman Jim Bacalles and prominent industry leader, Morgen McLaughlin. There is no formal "dress code" for this event. Many attendees do get dressed up in suits/ties or nice cocktail dresses, but few have ever attended the event in tuxedos or gowns. When asked this question, we typically recommend people avoid jeans/shorts and t-shirts, but otherwise recommend they dress in nice, casual clothing.

Menus
The delicious food served at various stages throughout this event will be prepared by CMoG's Executive Chef Christian Chiron. While Judges can look forward to fine appetizers at their private reception Friday evening, May 30 at the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, including Beef Apple Gorgonzola Crostini at our 2008 event, Award Dinner attendees will enjoy a truly phenomenal selection of dishes to compliment the many wines being poured Saturday evening. The 2008 event, described by Chef Chiron as "Earth, Atmosphere and Ocean Stations Dinner" consisted of these dishes and more:
- Grilled beef tenderloin with red demi glace, roasted roma tomatoes and crisp pancetta
- Seared duck breast with red currant glaze
- French green lentil soup with feta cheese and mint
- Pan seared sea bass with lemon butter on a bed of wild rice pilaf
And many, many more appetizers and dessert dishes.
